Reasons to Run a Weekly Prayer meeting, Mission for Jesus Blog
And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:24‭-‬25 NKJV

Hello beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, I hope you’re all fine by God’s grace. As for me, I’m blessed and highly favoured.

Today I would like us to talk about reasons to run a weekly prayer meeting

In July 2021, I wanted a revival in my relationship with God. As I was praying for a revival, in a dream God reminded me that Brother Curry Blake, general overseer of John G. Lake Ministries one time talked about a man saying that wherever his sermons were preached, a revival would start. In the dream it was clear to me that I had to read his sermons. So, when I woke up that morning, I looked in my sermon notes to find the day where Brother Curry Blake talked about that man, but I couldn’t find it. Consequently, I asked The Holy Spirit to remind me the name of the man, and He said Charles Finney.

That’s how I went on Google and searched with the key words Charles Finney and revival, and then I found Charles Finney’s Revival lectures.

I started reading the book and applying what was written in it, that’s how the Weekly Prayer Meeting was launched.

Last time, I promised to publish a series of blog posts to discuss more about how Charles Finney advised to run a weekly prayer meeting for revival. Before going there, I would first like us to talk about the reasons given by Charles Finney in favour of running a weekly prayer meeting

4 Reasons to Run a Weekly Prayer Meeting

1. To Promote love and unity amongst believers

Nothing tends more to cement the hearts of Christians than praying together. Never do they love one another so well as when they witness the outpouring of each other’s hearts in prayer. Their spirituality begets a feeling of union and confidence, highly important to the prosperity of the Church. It is doubtful whether Christians can ever be otherwise than united, if they are in the habit of really praying together. And where they have had hard feelings and differences among themselves, these are all done away by uniting in prayer. The great object is gained, if you can bring them really to unite in prayer; if this can be done, the difficulties vanish.

Charles Finney

As explained by Charles Finney, people who pray together stay together. Praying together regularly as a group just makes you people love each other in such a special way. Indeed, I can testify about this. Ever since we started with the Weekly Prayer Meeting, I have a special relationship with everyone who attended the meeting, especially with those who attend regularly. Though they may have been some misunderstandings with some, we love each other greatly, and even when we’re geographically apart we still have the back of each other and check on each other.

By this shall all [men] know that you are My disciples, if you love one another [if you keep on showing love among yourselves].

2. To extend the zeal of prayer

As explained by Charles Finney, God created us in such a way that our zeal can be transmitted to others when they spend time with us. During a prayer meeting, if the person who’s leading the prayer is zealous for God and for the salvation of sinners, their zeal in prayer will be felt by the others and will be transmitted to them. Such that the prayer may have started like something cold but the positive influence of the one with a spirit of prayer contaminates the others and puts everyone on fire. This is what usually starts a revival.

Here again, I can testify about it. I remember when at times I would feel tired before the Weekly Prayer Meeting, it just knowing that the others would be online made me attend anyway, and during the prayer, all the fatigue left. At times, instead of praying from 23:00 to 1:00 AM or 2:00 AM the zeal was so much and contagious that we extended the prayers up to 4:00Am and we stopped only because we had to go to Church in a few hours. This same contagious zeal is what pushed us to always come together for evangelism events, whether in parks or at an orphanage or anywhere God sent us to, and we have so many testimonies from doing that. Even when we were physically tired, the zeal of one another gave us the energy to continue. God is faithful, and I know that it was just the beginning and that God is going to use the Weekly Prayer Meeting to start a revival.

And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ [right up to the time of His return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you.

Philippians 1:6 AMPC

3. To experience a move of God

Another grand design of social prayer, is to move God. Not that it changes the mind and feelings of God. When we speak of “moving” God, as I have said in a former Lecture, we do not mean that prayer alters the will of God. But when the right kind of prayer is offered by Christians, they are in such a state of mind that it becomes proper for God to bestow a blessing. They are then prepared to receive it, and He gives because He is always the same, and always ready and happy to show mercy. When Christians are united, and praying as they ought, God opens the windows of heaven, and pours out His blessing till there is not room to receive it (Malachi 3:10).

Charles Finney

If you really want a revival, if you really want a move of God, a weekly prayer meeting will be instrumental. I can’t count the number of times we’ve prayed for people friends and family because we wanted them to be saved and during the week they contacted us to talk about their spiritual status. Prayer works. Charles Finney is known to be a powerful revivalist and his methods still work today because those are methods that God gave him to start revivals.

4. To bring about the conviction and conversion of sinners

Inviting sinners (the lost, the unsaved) to your prayer meetings will have a positive effect especially if you do it right.

Another important design of prayer meetings is the conviction and conversion of sinners. When properly conducted, they are eminently calculated to produce this effect. Sinners are apt to be solemn when they hear Christians pray. Where there is a spirit of prayer, sinners must feel. An ungodly man (a universalist) once said respecting a certain minister: “I can bear his preaching very well; but when he prays, I feel awfully – as if God were coming down upon me.” Sinners are often convicted by hearing prayer. A young man of distinguished talents said, concerning a certain minister to whom, before his conversion, he had been very much opposed: “As soon as he began to pray, I began to be convicted; and if he had continued to pray much longer, I should not have been able to hold myself back from Christ.” Just as soon as Christians begin to pray as they ought, sinners then know that they pray, and begin to feel awfully. They do not understand what spirituality is, because they have no experience of it. But when such prayer is offered, they know there is something in it; they know God is in it, and it brings them near to God; it makes them feel awfully solemn, and they cannot bear it. And not only is it calculated to impress the minds of sinners, but when Christians pray in faith, the Spirit of God is poured out, and sinners are melted down and converted on the spot.

Conclusion

Perhaps by reading this, God has put in you the desire to launch a prayer meeting or to join one, both ways this is a great idea. Prayer meetings are important, when done regularly they improve relationships amongst believers, they help us extend our zeal with one another, they create the environment for a move of God, and they bring about the conversion of souls.
