And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NKJV
Hello beloved of The Lord, you’re blessed and highly favoured.
Leaving a legacy is a very important part of finishing strong. The Lord wants us to teach The Word of God to our children, to talk about The Word when we sit at home, when we walk by the way with them, when we drive them to school, before going to bed and also when we wake up in the morning. Parents are to be the first disciple makers of their children.
Unfortunately, there are many families in which the parents really serve God yet the children don’t even know God. One of the saddest Bible verses comes in after the death of Joshua in Judges chapter 2.
When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.
Judges 2:10 NKJV
The verses which follow tell us the outcome
Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; and they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. They forsook the Lord and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.
Judges 2:11-13 NKJV
If we don’t train the next generation before we go, if we don’t set up systems, they may get caught up in the systems set in place by the devil and then end up serving the devil.
The young adult son of a famous man of God (known for healing the sick and raising the dead) was sick and dying a few years after his father returned to The Lord. On his dying bed he said “had my father been here I wouldn’t have had to die”.
This is the story of many children of men and women of God. They had the grace in their own house yet they didn’t learn from their parents before they left so that they could continue in the legacy. Had this son learned from his father as a disciple, he would have been able to heal himself even in the absence of his father or he wouldn’t even have fallen sick.
Elisha made it his priority to follow his master Elijah till he left. There is a mystery in discipleship which makes it in such a way that if you’re a good disciple you’ll be able to continue with the legacy of your master and produce even greater results.
If you want to finish strong, disciple people before you leave, both your biological and spiritual children in the faith.
If you want to finish strong, submit under someone’s leadership and learn from them either from your parents in the faith and/or your biological Christian parents. Learn from them. Keep in mind that the disciple maker isn’t to pursue you for you to come for lessons, you’re supposed to go to the disciple maker if you want to progress.
Prayer:
Father God, help me to be a good disciple and a good disciple maker so that I will leave a legacy for Your glory, in Jesus Christ’s Name. Amen
Assignment :
- For parents and disciple makers: Make a list of things which God taught you that you absolutely want to teach to your children/disciples eg time management, money management, how to pray for an urgent miracle, spiritual warfare and organise sessions to teach those things to them
- For children/disciples : Make a list of things which you would like God to teach you through your parents/disciple makers and ask them to teach you in those areas. When your parents/disciple makers try to teach you something, don’t act like you know everything. Listen carefully, take notes and say thank you.
