1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIVGive thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Hello beloved child of God, I hope you’re fine by God’s grace.

Last week we talked about three things NOT to do while waiting, and as promised, today we’re going to talk about three Biblical things to do while waiting .

To be honest, I’m not the type of person who loves waiting, but as we previously said, complaining in seasons of waiting doesn’t accelerate the process, it poisons our hearts and it may even delay the process. Also, comparing ourselves with others who already have what we’re waiting for will only push us to doubt God’s justice, and finally, despairing won’t help because if we want to receive anything from God, we’ve got to have Faith.

Therefore, we’re going to talk about three Biblical things to do while waiting:

1. Thanksgiving

1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

I know, I know, in our seasons of waiting our minds are easily focused on what we DO NOT have yet, so much so that we don’t look at what we already have, what God has already given to us.

We have to reverse this pattern by giving thanks to God for what we have.

For example:

You may be freshly out of school, looking for a job and praying for a job. Instead of focusing on and complaining about the job that you don’t have yet, give thanks to God for the skills that you do have and for the fact that you graduated from school.

You may be praying for a spouse and not meeting anyone yet. Instead of complaining about the fact that you don’t have a spouse yet, you can thank God for the fact that you have a family which loves you and meaningful godly friendships.

You may be engaged and waiting to get married for a reason or another but instead of complaining about the fact that you can’t get married yet, thank God for the fact that you are engaged.

The message is this, instead of complaining about what you don’t have yet, thank God for what you already have.

2. Rejoice With Others

Romans 12:15 NIV

Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

Rejoicing with others, and rejoicing for others is extremely important. This will help you fight jealousy and comparison.

In seasons of waiting, it’s easy to compare our lives with that of others who have what we’re still waiting for. Instead of comparing, we should rejoice with them and for them.

Is your friend getting married while you’re still praying to get married? Buy them a gift and rejoice sincerely with them and for them. Offer to do something to help them with their wedding.

Is your colleague having a kid, while you and your spouse have been waiting to have one? Congratulate them sincerely, and if possible offer them something for the baby.

Has someone shared on social media about how much money they earned while you’re still waiting to earn some money? Congratulate them sincerely, rejoice with them.

You’ve got to train your emotions to behave the right way.

People usually say “Fake it till you become it” , but as Pastor Steven Furtick says, it’s not faking it, it’s faithing it. “Faith it, till you become it”

You may not feel like rejoicing but rejoice out of faith and do something nice for this person.

3. Keep Hoping

The great difference between a mentally healthy person and a depressed person is the fact that the depressed person has lost all hope that anything can get better.

The problem we usually have while waiting is that at times we believe that things will never get better, and we lose all hope and all faith.

The problem with having no faith is that we won’t receive anything from God.

James 1:6‭-‬7 KJV

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

Hebrews 11:6 NIV

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

If you believe that you’ll die poor/addicted/sick/single/broken/depressed/childless etc. that’s what will happen.

If you believe that God will never deliver you and that all your life you’ll be addicted/broken/sad/poor etc. that’s what will happen.

God will not contradict what you believe about Him. The Israelites in the desert said that God brought them there to kill them. God was displeased by what they thought about Him but He gave them exactly what they believed about Him.

Numbers 14:1‭-‬4‭, ‬20‭-‬23‭, ‬28‭-‬31‭, ‬33 NLT

Then the whole community began weeping aloud, and they cried all night. Their voices rose in a great chorus of protest against Moses and Aaron. “If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!” they complained. “Why is the Lord taking us to this country only to have us die in battle? Our wives and our little ones will be carried off as plunder! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?” Then they plotted among themselves, “Let’s choose a new leader and go back to Egypt!” Then the Lord said, “I will pardon them as you have requested. But as surely as I live, and as surely as the earth is filled with the Lord ’s glory, not one of these people will ever enter that land. They have all seen my glorious presence and the miraculous signs I performed both in Egypt and in the wilderness, but again and again they have tested me by refusing to listen to my voice. They will never even see the land I swore to give their ancestors. None of those who have treated me with contempt will ever see it. Now tell them this: ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord , I will do to you the very things I heard you say. You will all drop dead in this wilderness! Because you complained against me, every one of you who is twenty years old or older and was included in the registration will die. You will not enter and occupy the land I swore to give you. The only exceptions will be Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. “‘You said your children would be carried off as plunder. Well, I will bring them safely into the land, and they will enjoy what you have despised. And your children will be like shepherds, wandering in the wilderness for forty years. In this way, they will pay for your faithlessness, until the last of you lies dead in the wilderness.

In seasons of waiting, the devil will tell you everyday

  • You will never get free
  • You will never get better
  • You will always be this way
  • You will never get a job
  • You will never earn the money you need
  • You will never get married
  • You will never have kids
  • You will never be healed
  • You will never feel forgiven
  • There’s nothing God can do to help someone like you
  • Your case is desperate

The moment you start believing his lies, you lose.

Things may seem hard but, look at God’s promises and keep hoping that God will make a way where there seems to be no way.

Conclusion

Waiting sucks when we’ve not trained ourselves to wait well. Decide today that you’ll wait with Thanksgiving, without comparing your life with that of others, but instead rejoicing with them and forget. Decide not to lose hope, decide to keep believing in God’s promises, no matter how hard your circumstances look like. God NEVER turns down those who wait on His Word to come to pass.
