Today, we’re going to talk about similarities and differences between a prophet (nabiy’) and a seer (ra’ah/chozeh).
Nabiy’ is the Hebrew word 5030 nabiy’ naw-bee’ נָבִיא in the Strong’s concordance and it is derived from 5012; 5030 means a prophet or (generally) inspired man:–prophecy, that prophesy, prophet. A nabiy’ prophet is primarily an inspired hearer and speaker. They are God’s mouthpiece, focusing on the proclamation and delivery of the message. They often begin their word by saying, “I hear the Lord saying
Ra’ah is the Hebrew word 7200 in the Strong’s concordance and it literally means “to see,” particularly in the sense of seeing visions. Other meanings include “to gaze,” “to look upon,” and “to perceive.”
Chozeh or Kho-zeh’ is the Hebrew word 2374 in the Strong’s concordance and it literally means “a beholder in vision” and can also be translated as “gazer” or “stargazer.”
Seers (ra’ah or chozeh) are primarily visual, receiving revelation through dreams, visions, open heavens, and the discerning of spirits. They often operate at a slower pace in delivery as they describe the images or scenes. They often begin their word by saying, “I see…”
Similarities between a prophet (nabiy’) and a seer (ra’ah/chozeh)
- They both receive prophetic revelations from God
- They both receive their message and empowerment from The Holy Spirit
- They both have as main goal to reveal Christ Jesus to men and women as well as to edify, exhort and comfort the body of Christ
- They’re both involved in revealing God’s Will to people. This includes foretelling the future, calling people to repentance and practising prophetic intercession.

All true seers are prophets but not all prophets are seers.
