Hello beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, you’re blessed and highly favoured.

Today, we’re going further in our series on prophets and we’ll talk about Nabiy’ prophets. The word prophet appears more than 300 times in the Old Testament and more than 100 times in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word used most often for “prophet” is the word nabiy’ (nahbi).

According to the American prophet James Goll in his book “The Seer” the word nabiy’ has to do with hearing and speaking, with being a “mouthpiece” for God, declaring that which one has heard. A nabiy’ prophet is a person who speaks on behalf of his superior, in this case on behalf of God

Let’s look at some Bible verses where the word Nabiy’ appears, and some Biblical figures who were recorded as being Nabiy’ prophets.

Abraham

Genesis 20:7 NKJV
[7] Now therefore, restore the man’s wife ; for he (Abraham) is a prophet (nabiy’), and he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not restore her,  know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”

Abraham wasn’t seen on pulpits, yet he was a friend of God, labelled as a prophet by God, meaning that being a prophet doesn’t start from the pulpit, it starts with your personal intimate relationship with God.

Moses

Deuteronomy 34:10 NKJV
[10] But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet (nabiy’) like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face,

Look at Moses, leading the nation of Israel out of Egypt, leading them throughout their 40 years in the desert. In order to govern the people in a way which honoured The Lord, he needed to have a smooth, regular and intimate fellowship with God. The wisdom to rule came from what God showed him and told him in private. Here again we see that you can’t be a good prophet if you don’t have a deep fellowship with God.

Aaron

Exodus 7:1-2 NKJV
[1] So the Lord said to Moses: “See, I have made you as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet (nabiy’). [2] You shall speak all that I command you. And Aaron your brother shall tell Pharaoh to send the children of Israel out of his land.

If you recall, Moses didn’t originally want to talk to Pharaoh on God’s behalf because of stammering lips, so God sent Aaron to be with Moses. Moses was supposed to be like God to Aaron, ie God would speak directly to Moses and Moses would say it to Aaron and Aaron would say it to Pharaoh. Aaron, in order to be a good mouthpiece had to spend time with Moses and listen to every thing that God told him as message for Pharoah and restitute it properly. The prophetic thus involves fellowship.

Jeremiah

Jeremiah 1:5 NKJV
[5] “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet (nabiy’)  to the nations.”

What stands out to me here is the people to whom Jeremiah was sent. God said He ordained him prophet to the nations. If you’re called to be a prophet, you must ask God what’s your target population, whom did He send you to? Did he call you to be a prophet to your family only, or to your village, your city, your town, one nation in particular, or many nations? You must know to whom God sent you

The Second Elijah; John The Baptist

Malachi 4:5 NKJV
[5] Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet (nabiy’) Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

We know that this Scripture in the Old Testament referred to John the Baptist and he had a clear message from God to the people. He called them to repentance, but look at his life as a prophet, living in the desert ,eating locusts and wild honey. Many people came to listen to him, yet he didn’t have a fancy lifestyle and he remained focused on preaching the same thing everyday , repentance (see Matthew 3:1-11) and baptising people , doing the same thing daily. At times we want something new to preach or teach everyday but from the life of John the Baptist we see that God can call you and give you only one message for the whole world, all your books and all your sermons will be about the same thing, and you’ll seem like you’re not moving forward but God knows why He sent you to teach exactly that to His people.

Jesus Christ

Deuteronomy 18:18 NKJV
[18] I will raise up for them a Prophet (nabiy’) like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.

This tells you that the prophet is supposed to be God’s mouthpiece. You’re not supposed to invent prophecies or to add to what God told you to say. Just like Jesus Christ our Lord, you’re supposed to say only the things The Father told you to say. Many people have led others astray by saying “The Lord says…” while it’s not coming from God but from them. If you’re called to be a prophet, be very careful each time you say “God says…” to someone because you will have to give account.

As previously mentioned, Nabiy’ isn’t the only word in the Bible for prophet. In the next blog post by God’s grace we’ll look at another word.  that of all the names mentioned here above

Prayer

Father in The Name of The Lord Jesus Christ, help me to be in close fellowship with you everyday, help me to understand that what fuels the prophetic is intimacy with You. Help me not invent prophetic “revelations” in order to gain fame and money, help me be a real mouthpiece of God, saying only what You want me to say and when you want me to say it, in Jesus Christ’s Name. Amen
