Psalm 4:8 NIVIn peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord , make me dwell in safety.

Hello beloved child of God, I hope you’re fine by God’s grace.

How did you sleep last night? I hope you slept well.

Did you answer yesterday’s questions on sleep quality? I hope so.

Yesterday we made it clear that if you’ve surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, you ought to have good sleep because God cares for you even while you’re sleeping. You ought to have good sleep, and God wants you to have good sleep.

Psalm 4:8 NIV

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord , make me dwell in safety.

Who is the employer who wants his workers to be tired all day and unproductive because they’re not well rested? Think about it.

You are a soldier of Jesus Christ. He wants you healthy and well rested, He wants you to get rest when you sleep so that you can be focused and productive throughout the day to bring souls to Him, and to care for yourself and for your neighbor.

This means that you have to take care of your sleep and to ensure on your side that you do not sabotage your sleep. Remember that as a Christian, your body is the temple of The Holy Spirit. When you take care of your sleep, you’re taking care of your body and thus taking care of the temple of The Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:19‭-‬20 NIV

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Today we’re going to discuss about a few things which disrupt sleep quality and a few ways to ameliorate sleep quality.

1. What Do You Eat Or Drink Before Going To Bed?

Do you take stimulants before going to bed? Coffee contains caffeine which is a stimulants. You can also find caffeine in Tea (green tea, black tea). Basically speaking, drinking caffeinated beverages before going to bed is exactly what NOT TO DO.

Make sure you look at the labels of what you drink before going to bed so as to avoid drinking caffeinated beverages. Medication too may contain caffeine, so watch out for that.

Not everyone gets difficulty sleeping because they took caffeinated beverages, here you need to observe how it goes for you. Nevertheless, it’s better to avoid these before going to bed. Consider instead drinking an infusion of Chamomile or Valerian for sound sleep.

Also avoid taking your vitamins before going to bed. You have to take them early in the morning instead.

Also, some people drink a glass of wine before going to bed. It may or may not have any negative effect on their sleep quality. However, it’s important to observe what works for you and also to avoid taking excess alcohol before going to bed, for this too will have a negative impact on your sleep quality.

Finally, I know some people get home really late because of their jobs or studies. As such they get to eat really late. Having a full rich meal before bed can mess up with your sleep. It’s better to take a light snack. So, you may consider looking for a way to eat before getting home, or to just take a light snack when you get home and to have a rich meal instead when you wake up in the morning.

2. What Do You Do Before Going To Bed?

One key to restful sleep is going to bed kind of relaxed.

How do you get relaxed before going to bed?

  • Develop a night time routine which makes you just chill out before going to bed. This may imply listening to calm worship music, praying and reading your Bible
  • Avoid strenuous and aerobic activities which tend to stimulate the body since this will not encourage you to fall asleep but it may instead keep you awake
  • Have a warm bath (not too hot if not it may stimulate your body) before going to bed
  • Practice aromatherapy (use scents which make you relaxed before bed)
  • Avoid conflicts, arguments, shouting before going to bed. Don’t go to bed upset if you can
  • Use your bed only to sleep (not to scroll down on social media)
  • Disconnect from social media, TV and any content which may make you upset, angry, jealous before going to bed

These are just a few tips which you probably need to experiment for yourself to see what works best for you

3. What Is Your Sleep Setting?

How is the room in which you sleep and is it conducive for sleep?

If your room is too cold, consider getting extra blankets.

If your room is not tidy it may actually make you uncomfortable and have a negative impact on your sleep quality.

If your mattress is not comfortable consider investing in a different one, one which will really be comfortable for you.

Is there noise near your room? If yes, find a way either to stop the noise or to mask the notice with a sound machine (for example using a fan and closing your windows so as not to hear the neighbor’s dog barking all night)

Here are today’s tips for improving sleep quality.

God willing we’re going to give more tips tomorrow.

Try to start implementing the tips above to improve your sleep quality.

Conclusion

As a Christian, your body is the temple of The Holy Spirit. Taking care of your body implies taking care of the temple of The Holy Spirit. Start investing in your sleep today.

Psalmists also write about insomnia and praising God in the night- that’s a good thing to do if you can’t sleep. And Solomon writes about those with more responsibilities struggling more with sleep because they’ve got more to concern them.

Thanks for the post!

Yeah praising God at night when you can’t find sleep definitely works in relaxing and helping you fall asleep later. Perhaps at times our insomnia is even a call from God to come and Worship 😊 who knows ?

Thanks for commenting. Sorry for the delay. God bless you
