Hi everyone, today’s post is about 5 types of friends and the next posts will be on how to deal with them.
Firstly, before proceeding I would like to emphasize on the fact that I am just describing some temperaments, not judging them. Just that we’re all different, and knowing how our friends are helps us know how to deal with them.
Here we go.
1. The life of the party:
Proverbs 17:22a NIV
A cheerful heart is good medicine
This is the friend who is always cheerful. I guess you have someone like that in your surroundings. You’ve almost never seen him/her cry, they almost always have a big smile on their face, and their slogan often is “life’s easy, why make it complicated?”
2. Mr or Mrs perfect:
Proverbs 3:7 NIV
Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.
Proverbs 14:12 NIV
There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.
Proverbs 21:2 KJV
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts.
This is the friend who is always right (never wrong). Not that he/she never makes mistakes, but when it comes to admitting that they were wrong they never do so. In fact if someone’s wrong it’s forcefully you, not them. They always have to be right about everything, mathematics, languages, science, life, relationships, religion, finances, they have to be right about all, and you can never contest what they said. Even if you try, they must always have the last word.
3. The melancholic friend :
Proverbs 17:22b NIV
a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
The friend who is always doubting/always worried/always sad. This friend is always dramatizing everything. He/she is like a whole bundle of emotions just waiting to be awakened. They always feel everything a hundred times more profoundly than you, and you’re surprised at how much they care about little details you wouldn’t even consider significant. They’re always emotionally affected by something and they’ll almost always express it by worrying or crying or both. (Looks like I am almost describing myself)
4. The susceptible friend:
Proverbs 15:18 English Standard Version (ESV)
A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger quiets contention
This is the friend who is always angered and offended. You can never make any funny comment about them because it’ll anger them. Whatever thing you say to them is taken as an offense, and it’s like you have to walk on eggshells when you speak to them because you never know at which moment they’ll just explode and scream at you.
5. The people pleaser :
1 Samuel 15:24 NIV
Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I violated the Lord ’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them.
Proverbs 29:25 NIV
Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.
This is the friend who never has an opinion. He/she is OK with every single thing so long as no one is offended and no one gets angry with them. They are the #1 pacifists you can ever have as friends, they won’t often disagree with what you want to do, nor agree with what you want to do, unless it’s what you want them to do. They just act like they’re so care-free.
Now that we’ve explained detailly some of the characteristics of each of these types of friends, we can explain how to deal with them in the next posts God willing.
While waiting, I would like to insist on the fact that, these categories don’t forcefully describe someone in particular. At times, one person exhibits the characteristics of the 5 different types of friend depending on the periods he/she is actually going through . as an example, I kind of recognize part of myself in every single one of these 5 types of friends. Just to say that, this journey should help us to understand ourselves better and to understand others better when they are in their special moods.
Prayer
Lord God Almighty, I thank You that at times I am cheerful, at other times I am extremely sad or anxious. I recognize that it has already happened to me to act like I happened to be perfect, or to get angry at every single little thing. Also, sometimes I have failed to reveal my true opinion just because I wanted to please others. Help me Lord in Jesus Christ’s Name I pray. Amen.
Thanks for reading.
