Rescue the perishing;
don’t hesitate to step in and help.
If you say, “Hey, that’s none of my business,”
will that get you off the hook?
Someone is watching you closely, you know—
Someone not impressed with weak excuses.
Proverbs 24:11-12 MSG
Hello beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, I hope you are fine by God’s grace. As for me I am blessed and highly favoured.
Today in the whole world we celebrate International women’s day this is a day where we encourage ourselves on the importance of advocating for the rights of females in the whole world. I believe that it’s an opportunity for us, Christians to talk about the rights of females in the society.
I’m not trying to create a debate on Christianity and feminism you know, but I really believe that Christians are the people who should stand up against every Injustice in the society whether it’s towards males or females. As such, I would like to talk about different negativities that females face in our society and how as Christians we can fight that.
Some injustices faced by women in the world:
Did you know that there are some countries in the world and some regions in some countries in the world where females do not have the right to go to school?
In some other places they may have the right to go to school but just up to a certain age like 10 or 11 after which they are given out in marriage. Thus they will stop school early on and they will not be able to get a proper education to get the type of jobs that they want to have and it will generally be perpetuated even with their female children after that.
Did you know that there are some countries in which when a female is raped she is punished by the law? some would go to prison and some others would be rejected by their families even though they are the victims and their family would say they brought shame upon them for being a rape victim.
Did you know that there are still families in this world where when a woman gives birth to a female child it is not really considered as a blessing for the family because they prefer males?
I think those cases are perhaps the most scandalous to us in our everyday lives but there are women who are being harassed in the society and no justice is made for them because they are women. Apart from that there are also women who are victims of domestic violence, some are abused by their husbands, by their siblings and at times even by their parents (incest etc.) and more often than not when they speak up about what they are going through either the people do not believe them or they will not protect them or they end up being punished for what happened to them.
So what is the role of Christians in all these negativities faced by females?
In the opening scripture Proverbs chapter 24 verses 11 to 12 we see that as believers we can’t just close our eyes to the evil that is going on in the world, we can’t just say “it does not concern me” or “it’s none of my business” . We read from Ephesians chapter 2 verse 10 that there are good works that God prepared beforehand for us to walk in them. This means that when we know about something evil that is being done we have to step up and do something about it.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10 KJV
“Give justice to the poor and the orphan; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute. Rescue the poor and helpless; deliver them from the grasp of evil people.
Psalms 82:3-4 NLT
How can Christians stand up for the rights of females?
The first thing I have to say here is do not be so focused on every injustice that happens to women only. As believers, we have to care about everyone’s case as much as possible so don’t get into the practice of helping only women because you are interested only in women. The perspective to have is that of Jesus who went about doing good irrespective of the gender. When you meet a problem ask for the help and direction of the Holy Spirit and solve it.
Now, specifically concerning the rights of females, I would say open your eyes and look around you. it doesn’t have to be far away or distant cases, perhaps in your family, let’s say in your extended family there are girls who haven’t been sent to school because their parents believe that it is more important to send their sons to school. Once you’ve noticed it, first thing you pray about it, you ask God for direction. Maybe God will lead you to talk to their parents so as to convince them to send them to school, perhaps through the conversation you will figure out that it is a financial problem and maybe God will put in your own hands the resources that will be useful to send them to school.
Another example; maybe if you open your eyes you will notice amongst all your friends, your colleagues, your cousins, a man who is very disrespectful towards women ; someone who is abusive towards women. In such a case, going back to the opening verse, you cannot be silent. Ask God for direction, speak to this person, pray for them, pray for their victims, find a way to sensitize males early on, on what type of behavior is acceptable towards the opposite gender.
If you push a little further with your imagination, you will be able to find different circumstances where you can interfere with the plan of the devil to do evil to a woman and you can change things.
I will conclude by saying that some things are just so deep into a system that in order to change them we have to change the system. As Christians, it is our role to fight against the negativity that we see around us whether they concern males or females. So, don’t just post on social media about the unfair things that happened to people, rather pray about it, rise up in prayer against it, and act on it as God inspires you. Happy International Women’s Day.
Prayer:
Father in the name of Jesus, we thank you for Your Word. Lord help us not to live as victims nor as mere spectators but as Your ambassadors here on Earth to do for the weak what You call us to do for them as good works for Your glory in Jesus Christ’s Name. Amen
