Hello blessed child of God, I hope you’ve had a wonderful week thanks to God. Mine was pretty cool, by God’s grace I got plenty of rest.
Today we’re going to talk about “needs”.
Have you ever been in a season of your life in which you really wanted something so deeply and thought that once you would get it you would finally be fulfilled?
Let me give you a few examples.
- There are single people who think that all the problems they have come from the fact that they’re not married yet and they think that it’s only once they’ll be married that they’ll feel happy, complete or perfect
- Some people feel void inside, empty, hollow, and they think it’s when they get sex, drugs or alcohol that they’ll finally be “normal”, complete, fine.
- There are people who think that it’s when they’ll have a job with a really important title that they’ll finally feel fulfilled and they’ll finally feel like they have achieved something
- Some students think that by getting the best grades, by being the #1 in their classroom, they’ll finally feel that they’re alive and important
- Some people just feel like their life is useless untill they get a car and a big house, until they become YouTube Famous, until they get 1 million followers on Instagram or until they earn a six figure salary
- Some couples think that they’ll be fulfilled once they’ll have children or they’ll be complete only when their children will become medical doctors or engineers
The thing is while we’re scrambling for these things as if they were oxygen for us, we are making them to be our god, we are giving these things the position that only God should have in our lives. God has a name for this. He calls this idolatry.
The worse part of it is that when we finally get it, we feel even more empty, miserable, lost, numb, or when we don’t get it we feel useless, lost, miserable, empty.
Actually, whether we get them or not, when we make these things the center of our universe we only feel miserable one way or the other.
Getting married isn’t a bad thing. It’s a Godly desire which God Himself put in our hearts. Just like sex is a Godly desire that God put in our hearts to be fulfilled in a pure way, in marriage. Money isn’t a bad thing, God blesses us with it for a purpose. Having a good job, a house, a car, a good salary, having children with our spouse, these things aren’t sinful. Wanting to be appreciated by people isn’t bad, but when we put it at the center of our lives we get hurt.
Do you want to know why ?
Because none of these was meant to quench our thirst for God.
What you really need isn’t a new wife or a new husband, what you need is the presence of Jesus Christ in your life.
All you really need isn’t a new laptop, a new job or a bigger salary. All you need is Jesus Christ.
He is the answer to all you need.
Exodus 3:14 NLT
God replied to Moses, “ I Am Who I Am . Say this to the people of Israel: I Am has sent me to you.”
When Moses asked God in whose name he was going to go to Pharaoh to deliver the people of Israël, God replied “I AM…”, and I love the way Pastor Steven Furtick says God let it blank so we can fill it with whatever we need when we need it.
God’s telling you today
“I AM the peace that you need when you’re trying to drown your anxiety in alcohol”
“I AM the joy that you’re looking for but you won’t find it in drugs you’ll find it in Me”
“I AM the healing that you’re desperately seeking for but you won’t get it through revenge and hatred, you’ll get it through Me”
“I AM the intimacy, love and acceptance that you’re looking for but you won’t find it while jumping from broken relationship to broken relationship, you’ll find it in Me”
“I AM the provider that you’re desperately looking for. You won’t find it in money, you’ll find it in Me”
God is all we need.
I know that if you’re already a Christian and so spiritual you’ll say “yeah I know, I’ve already been told that I have a God-shaped hole in my heart that only God can fill. I know that I won’t feel the hole is filled till I accept Jesus Christ in my life as my personal Lord and Saviour. And I did it already but I still feel the need to have a big house, to have a rich spouse, to earn a lot of money, to become YouTube Famous in order to be complete and happy”.
You know what?
Me too I know that we all have a God-shaped hole in our hearts which only God can fill. But do you know what they never told me ? ” You have to invite God to fill this hole every single day. ”
You have to choose that it’s God who will fill this hole in your life everyday.
Why do you think that God had to remind the people of Israel so many times that He wanted them to abstain from idolatry? It’s because the decision to walk with God isn’t just a decision you make once in your life. You’ll be tempted everyday to place something else or somebody else on the throne on which you had already placed Jesus.
When you decide that it’s only when you’ll be married, or only when you’ll be rich, or only when you’ll be famous or only when you have kids that you’ll be happy and fulfilled, you are making these things idols, you are taking your God-shaped hole and filling-in things which can’t fit perfectly with the hole, then you feel empty again
I’m not saying that you have to “pray the salvation prayer everyday“. You were saved the very first time you sincerely asked Jesus Christ to save you, but now you have to choose, I have to choose, we all have to choose everyday who is going to be Enough for us, who will fulfill us, who will make us feel whole, complete.
Only God can.
And maybe the reason why you’re going from frustration to frustration at school, in your job, in your relationships, in your marriage, in your finances, is simply because you’ve made those things the defining point in your life, you’ve put those things at the center, you’ve put in your mind that you absolutely need them, while all you really need is Jesus Christ.
Even if none of these things ever comes to pass, you have to feel secure, you’re supposed to be able to be at peace and to be okay even if you don’t have a husband, and kids, and a company, and a six figure business, you are supposed to be okay because you already have the whole package, God The Father, God The Son, God The Holy Spirit dwelling within You. God is enough.
He is enough for you.
Paul knew this too well. He had clearly made this decision, that Christ would be enough for him, no matter the situation.
Philippians 4:11-13, 19-20 NLT
Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Now all glory to God our Father forever and ever! Amen.
I admit I’m guilty of this too, when I have an aim I get so focused on it that I forget that it’s just an aim, it’s just a dream, even this dream has to bow down and submit to Jesus Christ. Only Him should be on the throne of my life, not my dream for money or fame, not my dream for marriage, not my dream for acceptance and approval from people etc.
Are you facing a season of frustration right now? We’re going to take it to God in prayer and we’ll ask HIM to fulfill our only true need.
Prayer
Father Lord God Almighty, I confess I thought I would get better if only I had…..(fill in the blank ex. a child, more money, a spouse, more friends, alcohol, drugs, sex, a boy/girlfriend)….now I know that all I really need is You. Help me everyday realize that You are enough for me, and help me live accordingly, avoiding the traps of idolatry, and obeying Your Word in Jesus Christ’s Name. Amen.
Also, if you haven’t yet made the decision to place Jesus Christ at the center of your life you can say the following prayer.
Prayer To Surrender Your Life To Christ
Lord Jesus Christ, I acknowledge that I am a sinner in need of a Saviour. I believe that You are The Son of God, and that You died on The Cross to forgive my sins and that God resurrected You from the dead. Lord Jesus Christ, come into my life, save me, wash away all my sins with Your blood, make me new, be on the throne of my life, direct my steps, help me live a life which gives glory to You and in which I’ll keep You at the center. Amen.
It’s Now Your Turn
How does it feel like to realize that all you need to be happy, complete and fulfilled is Jesus Christ?
