Ephesians 5:15‭-‬16 ESVLook carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Hello beloved child of God, I hope you’re fine by God’s grace.

We’re going further in the topic of depression today by talking about procrastination and the motivation myth.

For a depressed person, it’s more difficult to get motivated to do things. As such, because they feel sad day after day, they keep pushing stuff to the next day, and they feel even more depressed because they don’t have the impression they’re moving forward, since they’re procrastinating.

The interesting thing is we have this motivation myth. We believe that we’ll start doing tasks when we’ll feel motivated for those tasks.

The problem is, motivation may never come. If motivation doesn’t come, you’ll never do those things. If motivation doesn’t come you’ll never study, you’ll never travel, you’ll never pay your bills, you’ll never finish your assignments etc.

If you’re waiting for motivation to do things, you may never do them at all.

In fact, it’s when you start doing things, that your motivation increases little by little. The more you do something, the more you want to do it.

As the saying goes “Appetite comes with eating”

This means that if you want motivation to wash your clothes, you should start washing your clothes, and while washing them, a desire will be stirred in you to keep washing them.

Motivation comes in the doing not in the waiting.

Managing your time appropriately is extremely important. So, you’ve got to fight procrastinating by doing the right thing with your time.

Colossians 4:5 ESV

Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.

Ephesians 5:15‭-‬16 ESV

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

So, this is what you have to do now.

Exercise: Defeat Procrastination

Make a list of all the tasks which you’ve been procrastinating, and divide them into one task per day. (If it’s a very huge task you can break it into blocks and make a block per day)

It’s the same principle as with the exercise diary.

What you have to do is to write down each task you do everyday and to write down how you felt while doing it.

This is what will make you break procrastination.

It won’t seem easy at first but little by little you’ll get going.

You’ll have to keep using this “Weekly to-do list” or this Activity log every single week to keep working. Once you get back in the rythm of working, perhaps you won’t need the activity log anymore. Anyhow, I recommend that you keep doing this because having a clear list of what you have to do daily is extremely important.

Prayer

Father Lord God Almighty, I want to stop procrastinating, and to get to do the things You’ve called me to do here on Earth. Teach me to not wait for motivation to do the right thing, but to do the right thing and to expect motivation to come while I am doing it. In Jesus Christ’s Name. Amen.
