Proverbs 17:22 NIV

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

Hello beloved child of God, I hope you’re fine by God’s grace.

Today, I want to encourage you to dedramatize some thoughts.

If you’ve been following since we started talking about depression, you already know that depression starts with your thoughts.

Having negative thoughts is absolutely not funny but you can definitely learn how to dedramatize them.

You already know that all those thoughts which say you’re unworthy, unloved, useless… aren’t true at all, you know those are lies from the devil, so next time they come up in your mind, instead of crying and believing them and feeling bad, what you can do is laugh at them.

Proverbs 17:22 NIV

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

Yeah I mean it. Use sarcasm, and laugh at those thoughts because you know they’re all lies. That’s how to dedramatize it.

Let’s look at an example

Example: Dedramatize It

Miranda is studying to become a relationships counselor. She’s almost done with her degree. Unfortunately, in order to pay for her studies she has to deal with a part-time job which she hates. Her schedule is so complicated and she’s constantly tired. This is often discouraging for her. She tracks her thoughts and she notices three recurring thoughts. After learning to dedramatize her negative thoughts by laughing at them, here’s what she does.

Negative Thought Dedramatized response
I’ll never finish this degree {laughs} As if that could be true {laughs} God said I’ll prosper in everything I undertake (Psalm 1:3)
Even if I finish this degree I’ll make a lousy counselor {laughs} Ridiculous. Why wouldn’t I be a good counselor if God’s Holy Spirit of Counsel is in me? (Isaiah 11:2-3)
I’m going to be stuck with this part time job for the rest of my life Really? What a creative thought. (sarcasm) {laughs} God’s plans are to prosper me and not to harm me (Jeremiah 29:11)

I think from this example you get it on how this strategy works.

You know that those negative thoughts are lies from the devil. Just laugh about them and instead declare the truth of God’s Word.

With time you’ll realize that those negative thoughts lose their grip on you because you ridicule them and as you proclaim God’s Word with assurance you are clearly letting the devil know that you won’t buy into his lies.

Proverbs 31:25 NIV

She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

Exercise: Dedramatize It

1. Pay attention to your negative thoughts

2. Draw a table and in the left-hand column write down the thoughts which make you upset repeatedly

3. In the right hand column write a playful response to dedramatize those thoughts, ridicule them, laugh at them and state the truth which comes from God’s Word

Use this strategy with those negative thoughts and don’t let them steal your joy anymore.

Conclusion

The devil will try to infiltrate your mind with negative thoughts. You already know that he’s lying to you. Instead of dwelling on those lies and crying over them, laugh at them, ridicule them, dedramatize them and speak God’s Word over yourself. Don’t let the devil steal your joy with negative thoughts anymore.

Prayer

Father Lord God Almighty, when negative thoughts come up in my mind, help me dedramatize them by laughing at them and declaring Your Word upon my life, in Jesus Christ’s Name. Amen.
