Hello everyone, I hope you’re all fine by God’s grace. Today’s post is about something really cool that every single child of God is called to do: Worshipping God.
In order to illustrate my point, let’s look at Psalm 47
Psalm 47:1-2, 6-7 NIV
Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. For the Lord Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth. Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise.
Let’s get to the common misconceptions we tend to have about Worship
1. “I don’t feel like praising/worshipping today”
Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, the call to praise God is a command
It’s an order, a Divine instruction. We were created for God’s Glory, and one of the ways we give Him Glory is by singing praises to Him. It’s not about how we “feel like” it’s about what He instructed us to do.
It’s true there’re days where we just don’t feel like doing anything, but that’s exactly the time where we should turn to God to worship. If He calls us to worship it’s also because He knows that when we are in His presence, there’s a joy, a strength, a peace we get that we could find no where else.
So, next time there’s a song in church and you don’t feel like worshiping, push yourself to worship joyfully , and see how God blesses your obedience with His presence.
2. “Not everyone can sing ” / “Everybody isn’t meant to sing”
If everyone really wasn’t “meant” to sing then why would God have inspired the psalmist to invite us all to sing praises to God?
If you can use your voice to speak then you can use your voice to sing. I mean, if God has gifted you with a voice to speak, then you have all it takes to sing. No one asks you to be perfect (though it would be cool to aim at improving). God expects you to start where you are, to worship and just enjoy His presence.
Also, don’t worry if for any medical reason you can’t use your voice to sing, you can still close your eyes and sing in your heart (for example while listening to music), be at peace, God hears you.
3. “People who make pronounced gestures when singing to God, are weird ”
In case you’ve read the verses on top, you’ve noticed that we are called to clap our hands too. Everyone has his/her style when worshiping, but you shouldn’t refrain yourself from dancing, clapping and really expressing yourself as you’re singing.
This is way easier to understand for people who grew in revival churches, however, it’s not really easy when you grew up in a conservative church, where the only people singing during church service were members of the choir and dancing was limited to special occasions. Nevertheless, where you grew up or where you are now shouldn’t be a limitation.
When I started, it was awkward for me because I didn’t know what to do exactly, and it may be difficult for you too for the first time but when you’ll surrender to The Spirit of The Lord you’ll be filled with His joy and it won’t matter to you whether you are doing it “right” or “wrong” or “like others do” because the most important will be His presence.
You can start today in your room, to dance and clap your hands as you are singing to God, and guess what, God loves that. I’ll show you someone who danced and sung for God without limits and without caring about whatever thing people would say, and guess how he is referred to in The Bible? “A man after God’s heart”
Acts 13:22b NIV
God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after My own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’
2 Samuel 6:14 NIV
Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might,
Do you know what it means to dance with all your strength? That’s what King David did for God in front of everyone, common, don’t be ashamed. Don’t fear what people will think or say, it’s between you and your God.
4. “I am not really happy today, so I won’t sing”
If you sing only when you’re happy, then you’re letting your emotions control you. That’s not how it should be. You should sing to God when you’re happy, when you’re sad, when you’re jovial, when you’re in pain, when you’re at peace and when you’re anxious, when you’re cool and when you’re depressed.
Do you want to know why? This is because there is power in worship.
When you turn from your problems to God, He fills you with His joy, in such a way that even if you were sad when you started worshiping, by the time you’re deep into the lyrics and into melody, by the time you’ve let God move in your heart, you feel way better and you receive His joy.
You can’t leave a worship session the same as you came.
As a conclusion, let’s do a little exercise right now. Try to think of an area of your life, try to think of something which isn’t going well in your life, an aspect where you need God’s help, you need a change, you need a miracle, you need an answer but you just don’t know where to start. Maybe what’s missing in order to change your situation, is your worship, your praise. When you praise God, you unleash His power.
Psalm 47:5 NIV
God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.
When you worship God, you make His power available in your life through your praise and He sends His angels to start working on your situation. Maybe you’ve never tried this, maybe God’s calling you to try this today.
Think of this aspect of your life where you need a breakthrough, bring it to God in prayer, and start singing. Choose any Gospel song from any Gospel musician, or a song from your church or your childhood, start singing and praising God, believing that He’s in control, then let Him perform the miracle for you. (Don’t forget to praise Him till you receive an answer, when you receive an answer, and even after you’ve received an answer let it become a habit in your daily life).
Prayer
Father Lord God Almighty, as I worship You today, I let go of every anxiety, worry, shame, fear of others, laziness, and I just focus on You. Help me Lord apply the art of worship in my life everyday, in Jesus Christ’s Name I pray, Amen.
God bless you
