Hello blessed child of God, I hope you’re fine by God’s grace and I hope you’ve had a wonderful week.
I’ve recently started an online LIVE Bible study session every week on Instagram (@victoriaeyog) and it’s quite an interesting 30 minutes spent studying The Word of God with wonderful people every Thursday 6pm (GMT+1).
Basically, for every Bible study, we discuss Scriptures and my latest blog post.
After one of these Bible studies, a lady wrote to me on Instagram asking me to teach her how to study The Bible.
It reminded me that many people want to read their Bibles but don’t really know how to approach The reading of The Word of God.
In this blog post, I won’t try to give you a guide that you must follow step-by-step for a “perfect” Bible study session, but just some clues for your Bible studies to make them come to live for you.
There are many methods to study The Bible, but today I’ll share with you a method I learned from my mother, and which she taught us during childhood from the Bible reading guide of Bible League International (but this guide was specifically Bible League of Cameroon).
1. Start With Prayer
Always start by praying. The Bible is God’s Word, which means that the person who can best teach you to understand it is The Author, God Himself.
That’s why you have to start with prayer, always.
Your prayer can be as simple as thanking God for His Word and asking His Holy Spirit to help you understand His Word and to help you be a good soil to receive God’s Word and put it in practice.
2. Read the whole text
Whether it’s 5 verses or a whole chapter that you have to read, take time to read all of it without skipping sentences. You don’t have to speed read The Bible (it’s not a race).
Make sure to allocate enough time to read the number of verses or chapters you have to read everyday, so that you won’t speed read through it. Also, be in a calm environment preferentially because this will help you to be more focused so you can better prepare your heart to listen to God.
3. Ask Questions
Psalms 119:15 NLT
I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.
Once you finish reading, don’t just close your Bible, but ask yourself a few questions (or ask these questions to each other if it’s a group Bible study). This will help you to digest the text better.
- What/who is this text talking about?
- Does this text teach me something about God The Father, God The Son, God The Holy Spirit?
- Is there a good example (model) to follow or a bad example (model) not to follow?
- Is there a commandment (an order) God wants me to obey?
- Is there a promise for me?
- Is there a warning for me?
- Which truth does God reveal to me through this text?
- Are there any other Bible verses which help me understand what I just read?
- What was my favorite verse? Or the verse which impacted me the most? (You can write down this verse somewhere and meditate on it throughout the day)
- Is there anything which I should thank God for from what I read?
- Is there any prayer request I should make to God according to what I read?
- Is there any sin I should repent of and confess to God from what I read?
- Is there something new I have to believe and/or for which I have to start living accordingly?
Psalms 119:34 NLT
Give me understanding and I will obey Your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart.
4. End with prayer
Once you’ve finished with the previous steps, you can get to the conclusion of your Bible study by praying, thanking God for The Word, confessing, repenting, prophesying etc.
Basically, start with prayer and end with prayer. Pray that you will put His Word in practice.
Conclusion
Studying God’s Word alone or in a group isn’t that complicated. With a simple methodology, and some nice questions you can study your Bible in the simplest way as you let The Holy Spirit reveal His Word to you.
Prayer
Father Lord God Almighty, I want to know You more, I want to obey You, I want to understand Your Word. Help me study Your Word consistently, and may Your Holy Spirit lead me in every Bible study, in Jesus Christ’s Name. Amen.
