Matthew 6:27‭, ‬34 NIVCan any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life ? Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Hello beloved child of God, I hope you’re fine by God’s grace.

I’m going to start today’s blog post with a little song which my Mom taught me.

Why worrying when you can pray

Trust in Jesus He will lead the way

Don’t be like doubting Thomas

Don’t worry, worry, worry

Why worry, worry, worry, worry when you can pray

If you’ve been a Christian for some time now, you know that it can happen that you worry about something, that you pray about it, but that afterwards you still feel worried, right?

It happens to me almost all the time. Worrying about something, praying about it, feeling a temporary relief, and then once triggered, feeling worried again.

If you relate to that, then this blog post is for you because today, we are going to discuss about the importance of not worrying after we’ve prayed about something.

1. Pray Every time You Worry

Philippians 4:6‭-‬7 NIV

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

According to the Bible verse above, your normal reaction to stress shouldn’t be worrying but taking it to God in prayer with thanksgivings
Who knows how hard it is to give thanks while you’re worried?

This means that you shouldn’t be worried, you shouldn’t let worry catch you. Our human bodies weren’t created to suffer from worry.

When God created man and woman, He placed them in the garden of Eden, where they had all of their needs met. There wasn’t supposed to be anything such as worrying about food, clothing, money or anything else. God had already made everything available for them.

Nowadays, we have to “get” those things, and it’s easy for people to get worried because they can’t get what they need or want at any given time.

We have trained our bodies and our minds to be anxious, to get worried every time we want or need something we don’t have yet, every time we’re late, every time we mess up, every time we have exams etc but that’s not how it’s meant to be.

The Bible teaches us here to reprogram our minds. To refuse to get worried or anxious, but to instead take our issues to God in prayer.

Reprogramming your mind is all about training your mind to do something different from what it’s used to do when faced with a similar stimulus such that on the long run your mind will do the new thing you taught it to do and forget about its previous mechanism.

2. Peace Should Follow Prayer

According to the verse above, peace should follow prayer. It’s supposed to be a normal reaction in you.

Once you’ve prayed about it, you shouldn’t worry about it anymore, you should feel at peace.

This means that it should be such that when you’re tempted to feel worried again, you’ll just remember “I’ve prayed about this already, so it’s fine, God’s got this”

At times we think that one prayer is not enough, at times we think that we have to pray for the same thing many many times before God can answer us. Consequently, when we’ve prayed once, we don’t feel like it’s enough. As such, we keep worrying and we keep praying. Which shouldn’t be.

Matthew 6:7‭-‬8 NIV

And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

It’s not about how long your prayers are or how many times you’ve prayed, it’s about faith.

I know that sometimes, we pray and don’t see an immediate answer and as such we keep insisting and Praying Until Something Happens (PUSHing), but this too should be done not while worrying, but in complete peace.

The Bible also teaches us to reprogram our mind such that we know “once I’ve prayed about it, I refuse to worry about it”, why? -because I trust God

3. Worry Says God Cannot Be Trusted

Psalm 56:3 NIV

When I am afraid, I put my trust in You(God).

I read this somewhere many years ago, and it keeps being true.

When you worry about something, especially when it’s something you’ve already prayed about, or something God has already said about you in His Word, when you keep worrying about it, some part of you does that because you actually believe this : “God You cannot be trusted”

  • “God You cannot be trusted to give me a new job”
  • “God You cannot be trusted to give me a godly spouse”
  • “God You cannot be trusted to save me from my addictions”
  • “God You cannot be trusted with my studies”
  • “God You cannot be trusted to provide for me”

And because deep down we don’t believe that we can trust God with that, we worry about finding solutions to solve our problems ourselves since we believe can’t trust God with that anyway.

This only brings us into a cycle of worry because we’re not even settled about the fact that God will make a way for us.

I remember something Curry Blake once said. He said that when you join the military there are two things you know clearly.

1. You belong to the military/the state. They can do whatever they want to do with you, you don’t belong to yourself anymore but to them

2. Your needs will be taken care of. Food, clothing, health care, home, finances. You’ll be taken care of.

That’s how it should be and that’s how it is normally in the military. That’s exactly how it is when you belong to God, you belong to Him and all your needs will be taken care of systematically.

This means that some how, you may not even need to “ask God” to meet your needs, just to acknowledge “Thank You Lord for this too You will solve, You will meet my needs”.

If worrying about something you’ve prayed for shows lack of faith, then not worrying about it once you’ve prayed about it shows faith in God.

Matthew 6:26‭-‬34 NIV

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life ? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Conclusion

The human mind wasn’t created to live under worry, the Christian renewed mind shouldn’t live in worry either. God loves us and He will surely provide for us. Worrying will not solve anything. We ought to train our minds such that our normal response to stress will not be worrying but praying, and such that once we’ve prayed we trust God so much that we don’t worry about it anymore.

Prayer

Father Lord God Almighty King of kings and Lord of lords, I confess I trained myself to worry whether I prayed about issues or not. Teach me Lord not to worry. I confess I thought I couldn’t trust You and I tried to take things in my hands. Lord I want to trust You completely, help me in The Name of The Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

It’s Now Your Turn

What keeps you up at night these days? What makes you worried right now?

Take it to God in prayer with thanksgivings and then forget about it, stop worrying.
