Hello blessed child of God, I hope you’re fine by God’s grace.
In my journey of learning about God’s mercy (and I’m still learning), God taught me so many wonderful things, amongst which what I want to share with you now.
Are you one of these people who when they’ve messed up feel really horrible, and are ready to beat themselves up? I’ll be honest, I am. I think we all know at least one person who’s that way. Who feels like “because I messed up, I have to suffer”.
Guilt can make us behave in a really ugly way towards our own selves. Because of guilt, there are people who
- Mutilate themselves
- Drink excessively
- Practice drug abuse
- Jump into extra-marital affairs
- Commit suicide
- Practice self-harm
- Decide to close-up mentally and never utter a word again
- Become mentally disturbed
Guilt can really bring out the worst in us.
In the course of beating myself up for the millionth time today, Jesus Christ stopped me and said something that’s definitely worth sharing with everyone who suffers from the “guilt self harm/punishment syndrome”.
“Don’t beat yourself up for your sins, I’ve already been beaten up and pierced for them”
This brings us to Isaiah 53.
Isaiah 53:4-6, 10 NIV
Surely He took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered Him punished by God, stricken by Him, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Yet it was the Lord ’s will to crush Him and cause Him to suffer, and though the Lord makes His life an offering for sin, He will see His offspring and prolong His days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
Luke 22:63-65 ESV
Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him as they beat Him. They also blindfolded Him and kept asking Him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” And they said many other things against Him, blaspheming Him.
Yeah, this is written in The Bible, and today this is God’s message to the scrupulous and the guilty.
When Christ was humiliated, beaten up and crucified it was for you. He already paid for all of your sins. Beating yourself up won’t wipe any of your sins and won’t make you feel any better. Only The Blood of Jesus Christ can wash away your sins.
Yes, you deserve punishment for your sins, but that punishment Christ already took it on Himself. He was beaten up for your sins so that you wouldn’t have to beat yourself up for your sins.
It’s okay now, He has dealt with sin on The Cross.
- Stop beating yourself up for your sins, Christ has already died for them
- Stop yelling at your kids and your husband and destroying your family because you haven’t forgiven yourself for the abortion 10 years ago, Christ has already taken on Himself the punishment for that sin
- Stop cutting your skin because you disappointed your family by having poor grades and taking drugs, Jesus Christ already paid the price for that.
- Stop punishing yourself for the affair you had and confessed 1 year ago by taking in excessive amounts of food, Christ bore your sins for you.
It’s no use to torture yourself now. You are free, completely free in Christ Jesus.
Jeremiah 31:34b ESV
For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”
Psalms 103:1-3, 8-13 ESV
Bless the Lord , O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord , O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will He keep His anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him.
Confess your sins to God, receive His forgiveness and move on. Stop beating yourself up, God-willing you’ll do better next time. He loves you and will never stop loving you.
Philippians 3:12-14 ESV
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me His own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
I don’t know who this is for but:
Be healed today from self-harm in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Prayer
Father Lord God Almighty, thank You so much for loving me and for forgiving me despite all my sins. I confess I hurt myself for my sins, while Christ has already been punished for them. I thought because I sinned I had to feel miserable all my life and to hurt myself to feel the pain and punishment. I understand today that Jesus Christ died so that I could have life in abundance. I thank You so much for He has borne the punishment for my sins. Thank You for forgiving me. I choose too to forgive myself today, and to move on, in Jesus Christ’s Name. Amen.
It’s Now Your Turn
